What Exactly is an Ads.txt File?

If you recently got accepted into the Google AdSense program, you probably logged into your dashboard and saw a scary red warning banner saying: "Earnings at risk - You need to fix some ads.txt file issues." Don't panic. You aren't in trouble.

Ads.txt stands for Authorized Digital Sellers. It's a simple, standardized text file created by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB). Think of it as a public ID card for your website. It publicly declares exactly who is legally allowed to sell advertising space on your blog.

Why is Google AdSense Asking for It?

Ad fraud is a massive problem on the internet. In the past, scammers would create fake websites, pretend to be high-traffic publishers, and steal money from advertisers. To stop this, Google and other major ad networks made the ads.txt file mandatory.

When you place this file on your domain, it proves to Google's advertisers that they are actually buying ad space on your legitimate website, and not from a scammer spoofing your domain name. If you don't add this file, advertisers might refuse to bid on your site, which can cause your AdSense revenue to drop significantly.

How to Add Ads.txt to Blogger

Adding this file to a Blogger website is incredibly easy because Google has a built-in feature for it. Just follow these steps:

  • First, use the generator above. Type in your 16-digit Publisher ID and hit generate. Click the Copy button.
  • Open your Blogger dashboard and navigate to the Settings tab on the left menu.
  • Scroll down until you find the Monetization section.
  • Toggle the switch to enable Custom ads.txt.
  • Click on the "Custom ads.txt" text, paste the code you just generated, and hit Save.

Note: After you save it in Blogger, it can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks for the red warning banner to disappear from your AdSense dashboard. As long as you pasted it correctly, Google's crawlers will eventually find it and clear the error!
